Principal Investigator

Dr. Kalliopi Amygdalou

Kalliopi Amygdalou is an architectural historian and Principal Investigator of the ERC Starting Grant HOMEACROSS. She has previously worked at ELIAMEP as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellow (Programme REPLICIAS, 2017-2019), and her research interests include questions of space, architecture and cultural heritage in southeastern Europe. Prior to joining ELIAMEP, Kalliopi worked as Lecturer for two years at the School of Architecture of Izmir Institute of Technology in Turkey (2015-2017). She completed her doctoral studies at the Bartlett School of Architecture (U.C.L.) in 2014 with a thesis on the politics of heritage and modernisation in early-20th century Izmir and Thessaloniki.

She also holds a M.Sc. in Culture and Society from London School of Economics (2010) and a Diploma in Architecture from the National Technical University of Athens (2009). She speaks Greek, English, Turkish, and French. Her doctoral studies were funded by the Alexander Onassis Public Benefit Foundation (2011-2014) and the Foundation for Education and European Culture (2010-2011). Her recent publications include ‘Déjà Vu at the Archive: Photography, National Narratives, and the Multiple Histories of the Smyrna Fire’, International Journal of Islamic Architecture, Vol.9, No.2, pp. 315-336 and The Future as a Project: Doxiadis in Skopje (co-edited together with Kostas Tsiambaos and Christos Kritikos), Athens: Hellenic Institute of Architecture, 2018. Assoc. Prof. Ela Çil (IYTE)

She has her B.Arch and M.Arch degrees from Yıldız Technical University in Istanbul and received her M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan specializing on history and theory of architecture. Her academic work focuses on the past and present spatial practices within heritage sites including their representations in various forms of narratives, such as oral histories and literature.

She has made the exhibition titled: “Istanbul in The Early Ottoman (Tanzimat) Novels” in 2009. She has published on urban experience, gender and space and architectural design education. She is currently full professor at the Izmir Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture teaching architectural design and theory.

Ass. Prof. Fatma Nurşen Kul (IYTE)

Dr. F. Nurşen Kul is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage at Izmir Institute of Technology. She earned her doctoral degree from Middle East Technical University (METU) in 2010 with a thesis on conservation of Early Republican architecture. She received her M.Sc. in restoration from METU (2003) and her bachelor’s degree in architecture from Karadeniz Technical University (1998).

She participated two ICCROM courses; MARC06 (International Course on Modern Architecture Conservation) in 2006 and CBH16 (International Course on Conservation of Built Heritage) in 2016. Her main interest areas are conservation of cultural heritage, traditional dwellings, rural heritage and space-culture relations. She speaks Turkish and English.

Assoc. Prof. Ioannis N. Grigoriadis (ELIAMEP & Bilkent University)

Dr. Ioannis N. Grigoriadis is Associate Professor and Jean Monnet Chair of European Studies at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, Bilkent University.

He is also Senior Fellow and Head of the Program on Turkey at the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) and Editor-in-Chief of “Southeast European and Black Sea Studies.” In the academic year 2018-2019, he was Visiting Professor at the Keyman Modern Turkish Studies Program, Buffett Institute for Global Studies, Northwestern University. In the academic year 2016-2017, he was IPC-Stiftung Mercator Senior Research Fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik-SWP) in Berlin and Stanley J. Seeger Research Fellow at Princeton University. His research interests include Greek and Turkish politics and history.

Leonidas Moiras (Postdoctoral Researcher)

Leonidas Moiras received his PhD in modern Ottoman history from the Democritus University of Thrace in 2019. His dissertation is entitled “The Ottoman Perceptions of the Greek Nationalism 1821-1870. He is teaching History of the Ottoman Empire and Ottoman paleography at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

He participates as a post-doctoral researcher in the European ERC funded research project “Homeacross – Space, memory and the legacy of 1923 Population Exchange between Greece and Turkey” and in the European funded research program “DigitalThrace: Mapping the History and the Culture for the qualitative improvement of tourist destinations in Western Thrace”. He is the author of the book “The Greek Revolution through the Ottoman Eyes” (Athens, 2020). He has written several articles and publications in collective volumes and journals and he has participated in international conferences. His research interests include Ottoman Political, Social and Intellectual History, the Balkan Nationalisms and the Ottoman Westernization.

Asrav Emine Cigdem (Postdoctoral Researcher)

Emine Çiğdem Asrav, a conservation architect and former Post-Doctoral Researcher at HOMEACROSS, continues her research activities as a Marie Sklodowska-Curie CoCirculation2 fellow at Middle East Technical University (METU) and Politecnico di Torino.

After receiving her B.A. in Architecture in 2011 and her M.Sc. in Conservation of Cultural Heritage in 2015 from METU, she completed her doctoral research at Politecnico di Torino in 2020. She worked as a research and teaching assistant at both universities during her education.

Additionally, she involved national, international and multi-disciplinary projects including Sagalassos Archaeological Research Project (SARP) with Leuven University, Hands-on Practice for Sustainable Local Development project with Global Heritage Fund and SARP as an organizer and coordinator, ‘Sivil Mimari Bellek Ankara 1930-1980’ project supported by TUBITAK and VEKAM. She is a member of national and international organizations such as ICOMOS Turkey, ICOMOS-ISSCL, TMMOB, KORDER and MD1927.

Her main areas of interests are multi-cultural heritage, multi-layered landscapes, rural heritage, heritage policies, place-based and community-driven conservation. Her academic and professional activities can be followed at Linkedin, Academia and ResearchGate.

Meliss Cankara (Postdoctoral researcher)

Melis Cankara is an architect and architectural historian, and a post-doctoral researcher of the ERC Starting Grant HOMEACROSS. Between 2019-2021 she worked as a post-doctoral researcher at The Institute for Mediterranean Studies (IMS-FORTH) in Rethymno. She has previously held an Alexander S. Onassis fellowship for her post-doc research at the University of Crete, Department of History and Archeology in 2019.

After completing her doctoral studies in 2016 with a thesis entitled “The Silent Witnesses of The Population Exchange: The Buildings of Crete-Rethymno that Changed Hands with the Treaty of Lausanne”, she joined SALT Research as a senior archivist (2016-2019). She worked as a part-time instructor for two years at the Faculty of Architecture of Ozyegin University (2015-2017). Her doctoral studies were funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) in 2013, The American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT) in 2015. Her research interests are the population exchange between Greece & Turkey, Crete, spatial continuity, and 20th century architecture & design archives in Turkey. She speaks Turkish, English and Greek.

Alexandra Mourgou (Postdoctoral Researcher)

Alexandra Mourgou (b. 1988, Athens) received a joint Ph.D. degree in cultural geography at the National Technical University of Athens and University Paris 1 Panthéon- Sorbonne in February 2022. She holds an Integrated Master’s Degree in Architectural Engineering at the N.T.U.A. and a post-master’s degree (D.S.A.) in Urbanism at the Ecole Nationale Superieure d’ Architecture de Paris La Villette.

She has been a member of the HomeAcross team since May 2021 as a doctoral researcher (ELIAMEP) and as a post-doctoral researcher (Centre for Asia Minor Studies). She has also participated in other research projects, related to urban geography and/ or urban popular music. Her research on the interplay of urbanism and music has been published in journals, books, edited volumes, and conferences. Her first book was released in 2017.

Valia Gialia (PhD Candidate)

Valia Gialia is an architect (NTUA, 2009) and doctoral researcher at the ERC Starting Grant HOMEACROSS hosted by ELIAMEP. At the same time, she is a PhD Candidate at the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens (2019 – 2023) and also holds a MA in Museology – Cultural Management (AUTH, 2021). Her research interests include questions of exhibition design, architecture and museology.

Valia worked four years in the humanitarian sector for the implementation of EU-funded programs to address the refugee crisis in Greece (2016 – 2021). In this context, she also participated in exhibitions and cultural activities for the refugees. In the past, she has collaborated with important cultural organizations and museums in Greece for the design and coordination of exhibitions (Benaki Museum, OTE Telecommunications Museum), the organization of cultural events (SNFCC) and the curation of guided tours (OTOE). As a freelancer she has won awards in architectural competitions. She speaks Greek, English, French and Italian.

Ioulia Kariti is a project manager at ERC Starting Grant HOMEACROSS hosted by ELIAMEP and also at HFRI Research Program titled ODEMARS hosted by National Technical University of Athens.
