Principal Investigator

Dr. Kalliopi Amygdalou

Kalliopi Amygdalou is an architectural historian and Principal Investigator of the ERC Starting Grant HOMEACROSS. She has previously worked at ELIAMEP as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellow (Programme REPLICIAS, 2017-2019), and her research interests include questions of space, architecture and cultural heritage in southeastern Europe. Prior to joining ELIAMEP, Kalliopi worked as Lecturer for two years at the School of Architecture of Izmir Institute of Technology in Turkey (2015-2017). She completed her doctoral studies at the Bartlett School of Architecture (U.C.L.) in 2014 with a thesis on the politics of heritage and modernisation in early-20th century Izmir and Thessaloniki.

She also holds a M.Sc. in Culture and Society from London School of Economics (2010) and a Diploma in Architecture from the National Technical University of Athens (2009). She speaks Greek, English, Turkish, and French. Her doctoral studies were funded by the Alexander Onassis Public Benefit Foundation (2011-2014) and the Foundation for Education and European Culture (2010-2011). Her recent publications include ‘Déjà Vu at the Archive: Photography, National Narratives, and the Multiple Histories of the Smyrna Fire’, International Journal of Islamic Architecture, Vol.9, No.2, pp. 315-336 and The Future as a Project: Doxiadis in Skopje (co-edited together with Kostas Tsiambaos and Christos Kritikos), Athens: Hellenic Institute of Architecture, 2018. Assoc. Prof. Ela Çil (IYTE)

Ela Çil has her B.Arch and M.Arch degrees from Yıldız Technical University in Istanbul and received her M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan specializing on history and theory of architecture. Her academic work focuses on the past and present spatial practices within heritage sites including their representations in various forms of narratives, such as oral histories and literature.

She has made the exhibition titled: “Istanbul in The Early Ottoman (Tanzimat) Novels” in 2009. She has published on urban experience, gender and space and architectural design education. She is currently full professor at the Izmir Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture teaching architectural design and theory.

Ass. Prof. Fatma Nurşen Kul (IYTE)

Dr. F. Nurşen Kul is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage at Izmir Institute of Technology. She earned her doctoral degree from Middle East Technical University (METU) in 2010 with a thesis on conservation of Early Republican architecture. She received her M.Sc. in restoration from METU (2003) and her bachelor’s degree in architecture from Karadeniz Technical University (1998).

She participated two ICCROM courses; MARC06 (International Course on Modern Architecture Conservation) in 2006 and CBH16 (International Course on Conservation of Built Heritage) in 2016. Her main interest areas are conservation of cultural heritage, traditional dwellings, rural heritage and space-culture relations. She speaks Turkish and English.

Dr. Ayşen Etlacakuş (IYTE), Postdoctoral Researcher

Dr. Ayşen Etlacakuş is an architect (Dokuz Eylul University, 2006), and holds a M. Sc. in Architectural Restoration from İzmir Institute of Technology, Faculty of Architecture (2015). She completed her PhD in 2023 and continues to work as a Research Assistant at İzmir Institute of Technology, Faculty of Architecture, Department of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage.

She is a postdoctoral researcher at the ERC Starting Grant HOMEACROSS. Her current research interests are cultural landscapes, historic landscape characterization, preservation of historic rural and urban environment, and conservation of historic buildings and Geographic Information System (GIS). Her recent publications are ‘Evolution of a Medieval Castle Town and Its Landscape in the Southwestern Anatolia’ Conservation and Management of Archaeological Sites, 2023 (together with Mine Turan), ‘Characteristics of Housing in Darkale Rural Settlement, Soma, Manisa’, Periodica Polytechnica Architecture, 2023 (together with Mine Turan).

Valia Gialia, Doctoral Researcher and Project Manager

Valia Gialia is an architect (NTUA, 2009) and doctoral researcher at the ERC Starting Grant HOMEACROSS hosted by ELIAMEP. At the same time, she is a PhD Candidate at the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens (2019 – 2023) and also holds a MA in Museology – Cultural Management (AUTH, 2021). Her research interests include questions of exhibition design, architecture and museology.

Valia worked four years in the humanitarian sector for the implementation of EU-funded programs to address the refugee crisis in Greece (2016 – 2021). In this context, she also participated in exhibitions and cultural activities for the refugees. In the past, she has collaborated with important cultural organizations and museums in Greece for the design and coordination of exhibitions (Benaki Museum, OTE Telecommunications Museum), the organization of cultural events (SNFCC) and the curation of guided tours (OTOE). As a freelancer she has won awards in architectural competitions. She speaks Greek, English, French and Italian.

Stelios Gidis, Research Assistant

Stelios Gidis is a final year student at the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens. In 2021 he studied at the Scuola di Architettura, Urbanistica, Ingegneria delle Costruzioni of the Politecnico di Milano through the Erasmus+ programme.

He is currently working on his research thesis on the recording, mapping and surveying of fortifications of the Second World War in the region of Attica, Greece. He speaks English and Italian and he is interested in furniture design, as well as relief and silk-screen printing.

Nasia Antonatou, Research Assistant

Nasia Antonatou is a graduate of the School of Rural and Surveying Engineers – Geoinformatics Engineers (NTUA, 2024). Her thesis analyses how to solve real-world problems using neural networks.

In the context of the ERC Starting Grant HOMEACROSS program she has taken on the role of the Geoinformatics Systems (GIS) Technician . Her interests include, among others, geospatial analysis, involvement in biomedical issues, as well as environmental protection issues. She speaks Greek, English, and German.

Beylem Doğa Tabur, Research Assistant

Beylem Doğa Tabur graduated her B.Arch in Architecture (2019) and her M.Sc. in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage (2024) at İzmir Institute of Technology.

She is an architect and works as a research assistant at ERC Starting Grant HOMEACROSS at ELIAMEP since 2023.
