Publication by Kalliopi Amygdalou and Vasiliki Gialia, titled ‘Creating the Refugee City: The Example of Kaisariani’ (pp. 190-199) in the commemorative volume of essays that accompanies the exhibition ASIA MINOR: Heydey – Catastrophe – Displacement – Rebirth (2022), edited by Evita Arapoglou. The publication and the organisation of the exhibition were carried out by the Benaki Museum and the Centre for Asia Minor Studies.

The chapter refers to the spatial analysis of the development of Kaisariani, representative of many regions throughout Greece, and constitutes an attempt to reconstruct the Greek-refugee landscape through the history of urban planning and architecture. The research brings to light unpublished archival material and draws on new oral testimonies of people who lived there, in order to study the co-formation of the city and its architecture by the state and refugees, and to contribute to the discussion of the built heritage of the Exchange.
