Publication of Kalliopi Amygdalou, Emine Çiğdem Asrav, and Ioannis N. Grigoriadis, titled ‘Between Ritual and Restoration: Remembering and Reclaiming Ionia’s Religious Architectural Heritage’ (pp. 425-455) in the academic journal Journal of Modern Greek Studies, October 2022 issue.

In the last two decades, a number of old church buildings across Anatolia have been re-used as sites of sporadic or periodic religious services, at the initiative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. During the same period, many of these buildings were restored as cultural centres. Focusing on the Izmir region, this study considers the complex involvement of space, matter, form and ritual in the making of meaning and heritage, while contributing to the discussion on the legacy of the Population Exchange and on heritage preservation.
