Story Map | Lythri / Ildiri in Asia Minor: Before and after the Population Exchange

As part of the European Heritage Days 2025, under the theme “Architectural Heritage – Bridging the Past and the Future”, the HOMEACROSS project of the School of Architecture (NTUA) and ELIAMEP participates with the initiative Architecture and displacement: In the footsteps of the Population Exchange, presenting three thematic digital tours (story maps) that explore how towns and villages in Attica and Izmir were transformed by the 1923 Population Exchange.

The narrative map titled Lythri / Ildiri in Asia Minor: Before and after the Population Exchange examines the history and development of the settlement of Lythri (present-day Ildiri) over time, as well as how it was shaped following the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923. Through interactive maps and visual material, it presents key aspects of the village’s history and everyday life from antiquity to the present. At the same time, it provides a detailed account of the movements of its inhabitants to and from the village, as well as the changes these brought to its buildings. Finally, it highlights its current state and the residents’ concerns about the future of the community.
