Authored by Kalliopi Amygdalou & Vasiliki Gialia, the chapter ‘Creating the Refugee City–The Example of Kaisariani’, is part of the honorary anniversary volume of essays that accompanies the exhibition Asia Minor: Heydey–Catastrophe- Displacement- Rebirth. The volume is edited by Evita Arapoglou, and published by the Centre for Asia Minor Studies and Benaki Museum.

The chapter refers to the spatial analysis of the development of Kaisariani, representative of many regions throughout Greece, and is an attempt to reconstruct the Greek-refugee landscape through the history of urban planning and architecture. The research brings to the surface unpublished archival material and uses new oral testimonies of people who lived there, in order to study the co-formation of the city and its architecture by the state and refugees and to contribute to the discussion about the built heritage of the Exchange.
