Story Map | The refugee footprint on Nea Filadelfeia and Nea Chalkidona

As part of the European Heritage Days 2025, under the theme “Architectural Heritage – Bridging the Past and the Future”, the HOMEACROSS project of the School of Architecture (NTUA) and ELIAMEP participates with the initiative Architecture and displacement: In the footsteps of the Population Exchange, presenting three thematic digital tours (story maps) that explore how towns and villages in Attica and Izmir were transformed by the 1923 Population Exchange.

The narrative map titled The refugee footprint on Nea Filadelfeia & Nea Chalkidona examines the history of the establishment and development of the refugee settlement of Nea Filadelfeia, as well as the neighboring settlements of Nea Chalkidona and Madytos. Through interactive maps and visual material, it presents the different housing policies that were implemented, while highlighting key landmarks of everyday life in the area. Finally, it offers a digital walking tour of Nea Filadelfeia, through which visitors can discover some of the types of houses built by the state in the 1920s that still survive in today.
