Story Map | Refugee housing: An emerging architectural heritage

As part of the European Heritage Days 2025, under the theme “Architectural Heritage – Bridging the Past and the Future”, the HOMEACROSS project of the School of Architecture (NTUA) and ELIAMEP participates with the initiative Architecture and displacement: In the footsteps of the Population Exchange, presenting three thematic digital tours (story maps) that explore how towns and villages in Attica and Izmir were transformed by the 1923 Population Exchange.

The narrative map titled Refugee housing: An emerging architectural heritage highlights the significance of refugee settlements in Greece as living testimonies of modern history and architecture. Through representative examples in Attica, it presents the methods of refugee resettlement, as well as the institutions that implemented them. At the same time, interactive maps and visual material illustrate how these settlements shaped the urban fabric, inviting visitors to discover them as part of contemporary cultural heritage.
